Chapter 1
In the Dark
“Two hours ‘till heaven,” squealed Billy joyfully.
“Hold on little guy, “explained Dad. “We’re leaving later than you think.” Billy was usually a reserved little kid. At school he was quiet. At home he finished his chores and went straight to bed. For once in his life, my little brother was actually looking forward to something. He couldn’t wait to go camping.
On the other hand, I hate going camping. Dad always makes a huge deal about it, but it’s so boring. I’m Joe, almost fifteen-years old. My brother Billy is nine. This is his first time camping at Dad’s “secret” camp site.
“Joey, I can’t wait. What about you? Are you ready?” shouted Billy.
“Sure,” I said rather unenthusiastically.
The whole ride up north, Billy pounded me with questions. “Are we there yet? Are there bears? Can we go fishing?”
After suffering though his questions for an eternity, I exploded. “Billy, we’ll get there when we get there.”
“Sorry!”
The rest of the car ride was relatively quiet. Soon enough, though, we arrived. It was a warm, muggy afternoon. The sun was shining, but dark clouds were on the horizon. You could smell the aroma of pine coming from the aging trees and hear the sounds of birds chirping all around.
“Father, can we go fishing?” begged Billy.
Dad looked him straight in the eyes for a moment. I knew that look. It meant that we had to set up camp first. After the camp was set up, I was forced to drag the fishing equipment all the way to the lake myself. The task was grueling and worst of all; I had to bring all of Billy’s stuff. He was such as slacker. As we approached the lake, I dropped all of the poles and the bait with a loud “thump”.
“Careful, Joey, you don’t want to kill all of the bait.”
“Dad, my name is Joe!”I shot back. I hate it when he calls me Joey. It makes me sound like a little seven-year-old. I don’t mind it when Billy calls me that because he’s little. He doesn’t know any better. I grabbed my fishing pole and flung the line far into the water. Fishing always seems better than it really is. Most of the time you’re just waiting. When you finally get a bite, you’re not paying attention and your heart goes crazy. But anyway, Billy stilled like it. I caught two fish, a large bass and a sunfish. Billy caught one small pike, but he still glowed with pride.
One hour later
The sky was darkening to a deep shade of gray. We all hurried back to the campsite. “Hurry up, Billy; I think a storm is coming!” I shouted over the sound of the wind.
“I’m trying, Joey. It’s really hard”, Billy explained in his whiniest voice.
“It’s getting cold guys. I’m going to go gather some firewood,” said Dad.
Thirty minutes later
Billy was trembling in the corner of our snug tent. Obviously, he wasn’t having much fun on his first “adventure.” Dad still hadn’t come back from his quest to find firewood. I was starting to get angry, and a little bit nervous.
“Billy, you stay here, I’m gonna go look for Dad.” With that, I walked out into the forest. The rain was starting to fall and lightning cracked across the sky. I kept walking further through the maze of trees. As I progressed, the forest became even darker and more overgrown. Chills spread throughout my body and I had a feeling I was being watched. Suddenly, my legs collapsed and I felt something pull me into the ground.
“Get off of me, whatever you are!” I cried. The beast tightened its grip and I felt my body thrust downward. I was being dragged to the underworld.
I tried to leap out of the arms of the demon, but my body betrayed my mind and down I went. All of me was underground except my arms and head. I quickly glance around. To my left there was small branch. I tried to reach it, but I was too short. Now only my head was above ground and I had one last chance.
“Dad, Dad!” I shouted.
No answer.
I closed my eyes and hoped that I was just dreaming.
The next morning
My eyes opened and I looked around the tent. Billy and my Dad were gone. I sighed, “It was just a dream.” I started to smile as the tent flap opened. The next thing I saw was red, blood-shot, not-from-this-world eyes.
“AAAAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!”
