Feather of Flame ~ Chapter One: Part Five - April 16, 2011 by raqshan

forest

Chapter One:

I stared at the teacher. Her eyes were a deep green.

“Hello, class,” a voice seemed to call. It came from all around them. From the large trees that surrounded us, to the moss that crept along the wooden logs.

The voice was one, yet it seemed to be a culmination of voice speaking together, in unison.

It spoke again, “Welcome, class, to Natural Magic. This is where every living thing has a voice. Every moving organism speaks and has a wish. Here you will learn to speak with nature.”

The voice fell silent and then the teacher rose, and spoke, “Good morning, children. I’m Caren Tree. Call me Miss Caren. I am a Nature Witch.”

We all corused a, “Good Morning Miss Caren.” Then silence.

“Listen.” Miss Caren instructed. We listened. I strainted my ears to catch the faint whipers of….what? What were we listening for?

Suddenly, I heard a small spark pop. Well, I guess it wasn’t a spark, more like something running out of energy and it had, um, died.

“So, how many of you heard something?” Miss Caren asked.

I raised my hand along with a few others. Logan was among them.

Miss Caren pointed at him and asked, “What did you hear, young sir?”

“I….I heard something…I-I don’t know what,” Logan said.

“Mm…,” the teacher spun around and walked to a huge fir tree. She placed her palm on it a let out a soft noise. Then she began a long prolongation, sort of melody.

The air seemed to shimmer around her, and suddenly, another voice joined in. It was a deep one. I couldn’t make out what it said, but somehow, I got the feeling that this song, that the two were singing in another language, was about…..the seasons.

The teacher opened her eyes, removed her palm from the tree’s trunk and smiled, “So you see, talking to nature…not everyone can can do it.”

Silvery Darkness ~ Chapter One: Part One - April 13, 2011 by raqshan
elf
Chapter One:
I stretched my bow tight. The arrow was aimed at a sparrow. The sparrow tittered. It hopped on a leg and pecked at the littered forest floor.
Above, sunlight streamed through the thick canopy, casting a pattern of golden light on the forest floor.
I let the arrow go. Zip……. The arrow shot through the air and hit its target. The sparrow was silent.
I slipped through the foliage without a sound and made my way to the fallen sparrow. I bent over it, examining its previously broken wing. From the way it with a mop of thick blwas bent, I could tell it had been broken by a heavely crash landing. I picked up the dead bird and dropped it into my sack that hung from my shoulders. Slowly, I made my way back through the thick froest plants and brush. Finally, I reached the city gate. The gate was made of gleaming gold and along the frame, ran wines, leaves, and flowers carved from limestone.
A tall elf stood by the gate. He wore a heavy helmet made of thick marble that covered a mop of thick black hair.
“‘Morning, Aliaka,” Mavek smiled at me, “How was the hunting?”
“Fine, Mavek,” I smiled back, “Caught a rabbit with a limp, a squirrel with a missing tail, and a sparrow with a broken wing.”
“Good. Good.” Mavek creaked open the large gate, “I think you’ll pass the test.”
“Hope so,” I muttered as I passed through.
Inside, I was bombarded by the sound of the city.
The city of Elwyn. My home.

Silvery Darkness ~ Prologue - April 13, 2011 by raqshan

elf

Prologue:

The forest was silent but in its silence great words were spoken through the rustle of the leaves and the whisper of the wind through the tightly strung branches. In the center of the forest, was a large city called Elwyn. It was constructed of marble, gold, limestone and wood.

Tall, wide buildings of limestone crowded together and pillars of gold glimmered. There was a second story to the city too. Large wooden rope bridges, connected endless walkways in the sky. The gold pillars attached from the cobblestone paths on the ground and the glass walks above.

Elves. This is the kingdom of elves….

Feather of Flame ~ Chapter One: Part Four - April 12, 2011 by raqshan
Fawn
Chapter One:

“So,” the new teacher turn towards us at last, “I’d like to welcome all of you to Wild Magic.”

I have to say, I was stunned. I guess we all were. Our new teacher was….new. Or young I guess.

He had a think mop of straw colored hair on his head (NOT thinning like most teachers) and from my seat I could tell his eyes were a deep hazel.

I swear, half the girls in the room were swooning. I myself was staring.

The teacher, though, seemed oblivious to his classes reactions. He looked at all of us as  one would, a silly, small 7 yearold kid.

“My name is Mathew Daniels, but you just call me Mathew,” he grinned from ear t0 ear at us.

The rest of the period past pretty quickly, with a lot of introductions to what we would be learning this year. As soon as the class was dismissed, I grabbed my book bag and was about to jump out the door, when the boy next to me, Logan, said, “Hey, wait up.”

I spun around. I wasn’t expecting him to talk to me.

“What class do you have next?” he asked.

“Um,” I tried to remeber and then had it, “Natural Magic.”

“Sweet, ” he smiled, “Same here.”

I gave him a have smile have frown. I wasn’t sure about him yet. I turned and walked out the door, he followed.

On the way out the door, Aspen caught up to me.

“Fawn!” she yelled, “Natural Magic’s this way!” She pointed down the hall towards the back exit of the school.

I smiled at her and said, “Thanks Aspen,” then a whiper, “We’ve got company.”

Aspen gave Logan a quick quizzical look and then asked, “You’re name?”

“Logan. Logan Sparks,” he said. He seemed to have become that distant, unobserving person again.

Aspen shrugged, “Whatever.” She turned and I followed her down the hall.

Soon, the two of us, plus one equals three, were outside, in our “outdoor classroom”. It was sort of a natural anphitheater. Wooden logs created a wide circle around the base, where in the center sat a long wooden table.

I sat down with Aspen on one side and the new boy on the other. Soon, the theater filled with cloaked students, bacame noisy, in aticipation ofr the new teacher.

Just then the entire theater seemed to become quiet. I turned to Aspen.

“What happened?” i asked. Or tried to ask. No sound came from my mouth. Aspen’s red eybrows were knitted together and her mouth was working furiously, trying to make a sound.

Just then, there was a Poof and a lovely lady was sitting at the center of the theater. Her lustrous blond hair was tied into plaits and streamed down her back. I counted five thick plaits. Her eyes were closed.

Suddenly, her eyes opened and the theater was filled with voices.

Feather of Flame ~ Chapter One: Part Three - April 12, 2011 by raqshan

Chapter One:

I felt a soft breeze brush my cheek as Aspen and I made our way across the large courtyard. My cape swished this way and that against my tunic. despite the cold however, I left my cape open so that everyone could admire my new tunic I had gotten over the yearly break. It was silvery and shone, even in the muffled light of winter. I wasn’t alone in this though. Almost everyone had their own cape open, displaying their new clothes. Aspen was wearing a red tunic, one that looked like her torso was covered in a flaming cloth. Even I could tell it was enchanted.

“So,” Aspen smiled, “What do you think?”

“Of what?” I asked. We entered the Student Hall, where all the classrooms were located.

“The new kid,” Aspen nudged me, “So…?”

“What’s there to think?” I asked spinning away from her, in the direction of our first class; Wild Magic, ” I don’t know him. It is a new year after all.”

“Still,” Aspen grinned. Her green eyes sparkled and glittered with a mischievous light.

I rolled my eyes at her as we entered the room. Inside, coupled desks were placed around the room. At the head of the room, a man stood, his back to the room, writing on the chalk board.

Without turning, he said, “I’d like each of you to sit at a desk that is farthest away from your friends.”

Aspen and I shared a anxious glance, but chose desks farthest away from each other. I chose one at the front and Aspen chose one at the back. I sat down in a chair and let my book bag sink to the floor next to me. Kids streamed in. They looked up at the chalkboard, saw what was written on it, and did not hesitate to sit at different corners of the room.

Someone took the desk next to me. He had dark curly hair and blue eyes. His face was solemn and he stared right ahead, seeming oblivious to his surroundings.

“Um…Hi,” I said,  trying to make conversation.

“Hey,” his voice was soft and distant, as if he wasn’t really there.

He shook his head suddenly, as if waking from a dream. He looked at me for the first time. His eyes searching my face. His head nodded slightly and he said, “Hi.”

The Young Inventor - April 7, 2011 by mysterygirl

CHAPTER ONE

One cool, crisp Fall afternoon after Harman Middle School let out for the day Sasha Wyatt walked happily to the park. Sasha loved inventing new gadgets and she loved the idea that she could be an inventor someday and make great things, that would be known all over the world. Everyday when she wasn’t busy babysitting her 2 seven year old brothers or doing homework she went to the park to observe gadgets. She examined things at the park like lawnmowers, water fountains, weed whackers, electric scooters, bikes and much more, then once she was done she wrote down in her invention notebook how the things worked, the materials used to make the things and how the invention affected the world. In Sasha thirteen years on the planet she had run through about thirty of her invention notebooks already! Today she was writing in her notebook about vending machines. She spent hours looking at the machine and recording things in her notebook she was pleased with what she accomplished today. Just as Sasha was finishing her last sentence in her notebook she heard her blackberry’s familiar Kesha ring tone.

“Hi Sasha’s cell!” Sasha said into her phone cheerfully.

“SASHA JENNIFER WYATT YOU GET YOUR BUTT HOME THIS INSTANT!” her mothers familiar voice screeched angrily into the phone.

“Mom whats wrong?” Sasha questioned “what did i do?”

“Whats wrong is that your TWENTY MINUTES LATE FOR DINNER!” Barbara Wyatt snapped her voice escalating with annoyance.

” Oh my gosh mom I am so sorry I am on my way home right now!” Sasha exclaimed her voice full of worry.

“I expect you home in 5 minutes young lady!” her mother warned then hung up hastily.

Sasha looked at the time on her phone quickly it was six-twenty-five and Sasha was supposed to be home almost a half and hour ago! I am in so much trouble Sasha thought anxiously then she grabbed her notebook got on her skateboard and sped home.
