Talking to you again
Its like a sigh of relief
Like the cool wind
On a hot summer’s day
A sigh of relief that blows through my life
That refills my lungs with air
During the time
You went missing from my world
It was like a state of war
Happening inside my head
Was like the dry Autumn evening
That makes you crave a breath of cool moist air
And now with you back in my life
The air is filling my lungs
The relief is filling my life
But today is different
This time isn’t the same
You aren’t the air keeping me alive
Just the gust helping it along
We’ll talk and reminisce
Of all the times
Good and bad
We’ll talk of our life
And what it has become
Nothing more
Nothing less
Just two friends
Figuring out a mess
Times will get better
We will perceiver
But you and I
Just talking as friends
Is something
I thought I would never hear
I woke up when Blaze suddenly decided to move and sent my head toppling onto the ground. The sun was just peaking over the horizon and was warm against my cold skin when it him me. Ryan’s horse hadn’t move but was awake and kind enough of stay down and let him sleep.
“Why can’t you be more considerate like Ryan’s horse?” I whispered to Blaze. He whinnied in response.
The fire had long went out and no wood was left but I took a can of hot embers that could be used to start a fire. Ryan had finally woken from the glare the bright sun and I quickly packed and was on the move in less time it took Ryan to get on the saddle.
“Where are we going?”
“Don’t know. How much water is left?”
“I only have 3 skins left.”
“Well if we ration it out, we could easily make it last for 4 days. We’ll head south.”
We walked most of the day setting up a cover tent in the middle of the day to protect us from the hot sun but kept moving once the heat was less intense. This went on for a few days and the whole time Ryan wouldn’t stop talking. I didn’t mind at first. In fact I enjoyed learning about his childhood and what he did and how he got to be sure a high rank person in the Savvy tribe. But after the 3rd day, it all sounded the same. Finally on the 4th day something actually happened.
“Uhh you see the trees too right? Or am I crazy.”
“No you’re pretty sane. Either that or I’m crazy too.”
In the distance we spotted some palm trees and speed up to see if it really was an oasis. A large pool of water the size of a swimming pool was a few feet deep into the ground and surrounded by thriving plants.
“See? I told you. My instinct never fails me.” I looked at Ryan with raised eyebrows and he grinned at me. Water = bath. At least that’s what Ryan was thinking.
“I’m taking a bath. Don’t look.”
I heard a loud splash while I was setting up camp. The sun didn’t even set but I figured we should stay for a little while and rest up. The horse weren’t even thinking of walking away from camp and stayed in the shade of the palms. Ryan finally came back with wet hair and drops of water still staining his face with his shirt damp from his wet skin but quickly drying in the sun that was soon to set. I grabbed my bag of cloths and went down to the water to clean them. Two weeks in the deserts with only four pairs of cloths leaves them very dirty and I may not get another chance to wash up. Ryan was close behind me and while I scrubbed my cloths with wet sand I scooped up from the bottom of the pool. I washed it out and left the cloths out to dry on a branch of a palm.
“Don’t look.” I told Ryan.
“I wouldn’t dare.” He exaggerated. Ryan turned away from me and leaned against a tree.
I dived into the water and was comforted by its warm feel. I took sand and washed myself as best as I could. I noticed Ryan’s head was slowly turning to look at me over his shoulder. I grabbed sand and right when I saw the corner of his eye threw it in his face. He laughed and rubbed the sand out of his red eyes. I quickly finished and got out of the water to dress in an area hidden from view then air dried my hair. I came back close to the fire made out palm tree bark and dead plants and took the blanket Ryan once again took out of his bag. The sun was beginning to set and the night time chill was rolling in. Finally all of the light was gone except for the shine of the half-moon and stars over head. I leaned back a little and craned my neck so that I could see all of the beautiful constellations that were visible only in this area of the world. Ryan leaned closer to me so his hand was only inches away from mine. At some point I must have fallen asleep because I remember nothing after that. All I can remember was walking up with my head in Ryan’s lap. I scowled at myself for doing such a thing while I’m still engaged. He was still asleep and leaning against a tree with the blanket draped over his shoulders from the front. Nothing much happened that day. All we did was sleep and bath and sleep again, resting up for the long journey ahead of us. Two days later we finally packed up and left with the water skins overflowing with water and continued to head south. This time Ryan was silent and absorbed in his own thoughts. I wanted to ask what was on his mind but didn’t, afraid that he would launch into another one of his long speeches. Nothing happened, we didn’t run out of water, it was a long and boring trip… till we hit the mountain.
