I don’t even wish to look up as I hear my cell door scrape open. I clutch my already aching and empty stomach and close my eyes.

“Go away….” I think to myself. But there is no hand on my shoulder, punching me awake and grabbing my hair. I look up to what is wrong. Aye. She’s really there. She held out a package to me and asked me how I was doing, as I timidly took it from her. I nod to answer her, hands shaking as I untie the string.

Inside are two pieces of soft, crumbly bread. I pick it up and eat it quickly, savouring its warm, buttery taste. Aye’s smiling.

I pick up the other slice and eat it more slowly this time.

Finally, when I’m finished, I look up at Aye.

“Why are you being so nice to me?” I ask her, coughing. I am not yet used to my voice. I haven’t spoke in 16 years. Aye smiles weakly and gazes out of the tiny window. She tells me a tale about her older brother. Shot dead in front of her. Tells me about a promise she believes she broke.

“I don’t want the same happening to you….I feel like I’ve known you all my life…” she finishes. I am so touched by this. She’s proved to me there is one last tiny little shred of hope in this cruel place. I reach out and pat her hand.

“I feel like I’ve known you all my life too…”

Night-times are always the worst. It’s cold. Lights go out so the entire Fortress is plunged into pitch black darkness. There are a few torch beams bouncing around every half hour or so.

Its deathly silent too.

There a few faint screams, but they’re in the other wing.

Suddenly, there was a loud scream, closer to my cell. A clang as a torch hits the floor, its beam darting around wildly before coming to a halt.

It disappears and more screams echo throughout the Fortress.

The next morning Aye does not collect me. Two Guards do, grabbing my wrists roughly and hauling me down endless corridors and staircases. They are talking but I can’t even be bothered to listen properly. What do I care if one of them’s in line for a promotion? They can get shredded to bits by these creatures everyone talks about, for all I care.

“Did you hear that commotion last night?”

“No, I was on duty in North Wing. What happened?”

“Some kid guard got battered with their own torch. Heard it was that…Aye girl”

The other guard chuckled.

“Bet she stepped out of line again. She’s stupid really…why bend and break rules when Ezra’s your guardian? She deserves it…”

I can’t take it anymore.

“SHE DIDN’T DESERVE IT! AYE HAS DONE NOTHING! You’re all psychopaths in this place! You’re not human! Humans have feelings!”
