This entry is part 8 of 12 in the series Reverse

When Carla and Paul reached the airport, they were almost out of money. Carla hadn’t taken any when they were being pursued by the Mafia, but she could withdraw some at the bank near the airport. Paul, of course, had no money, seeing as he hadn’t thought to bring any when he travelled back in time. while Carla was taking out her money for two tickets to Spain, Paul walked over to the newsagents. He couldn’t read the papers but he saw the date was the 30th of January, 2010. From the airport clock he could see it was 11:20 pm, which gave him twelve days, six hours and about eight minutes to save his mom.

He had stored the staff in a trombone case they had bought from a music shop. he had thought about using it again to give himself some more time, but he didn’t want to risk it. He had collapsed for hours the first time. There was no telling what could happen now.

When Carla came back, her bag was bulging with cash. “Here.” she said to Paul, handing him some. “That’s enough to get us to Spain from here. After that, I’m afraid you’re on your own.”

Paul nodded in gratitude. “Carla…I really appreciate you doing this. I know you might get in trouble now but…well thanks.”

Carla brushed her hair out of her eyes without looking at him. “Come on. The next plane’s leaving in an hour.”

****************************************************************************

They arrived in Madrid at three ‘o’ clock in the morning. Paul was fresh now, as he had got a long sleep on the plane. Carla had been restless at the thought of being in her homeland. To swim on those beautiful beaches again…. It was too much to bear. And to think it’s because of this man drooling next me! she thought. And then he was actually thanking her! She was a thief, plain and simple. That money she’d got for the tickets had been stolen out of the Mafia’s private account. She had swiped the credit card out of the big Russian guy’s pocket after she’d knocked him out. She should be thanking this man, the American Paul Kane.

With all this on her mind, it was clear why Carla didn’t get any sleep. So when they landed in Madrid, she had dark circles under her eyes. She was in a foul mood, but it cleared up when she got a good whiff of fresh, Spanish air. They walked up to the car park together, and then it was time to say goodbye.

“I guess I better go now.” frowned Paul “I mean, I don’t have any money with me. But I’ll find a way.”
Carla didn’t say anything for a minute and then she threw the bag at him. “Here. Take it. You need it much more than me.”

Paul looked inside the bag and his jaw dropped. “Carla…There must be $3000 in here!!”

Carla nodded. “I know. But the Mafia wouldn’t put a good use to it. So take it. save your mother”

There was a short pause and then Paul sighed. “Okay. Bye Carla.”

Adios Paul.”

Paul walked away glumly, even with the massive amount of money in his hands. It felt good to have a companion, if only for a short while. But just then, he heard a faint yell from behind him.

“Paul, wait!!!”
